Board Games on the Values of Documenta Fifteen

Mary-Clare Kidenda

Focus: Games/Society/Art

The international workshop at HSA in cooperation with documenta 15 and the Technical University of Kenya is based on the guiding ideas of documenta fifteen. These can be understood as a call to build creative spaces for action, developing knowledge and design ideas ("gestaltung") for a more human environment. The workshop aims to develop these concepts, visualize them and make them accessible for different target groups in a playful way. The format and medium used is board games. As a possible follow-up in the context of documenta fifteen the development of a computer game based on this experience is intended. The workshop will be held together with Kenyan students who will participate via Zoom. This allows an intercultural approach to the values of documenta.

Methods

  • short introductory lessons, topics: documenta values, game principles, intercultural issues
  • pitching and documentation of concepts
  • rapid prototyping and iterative re-conception
  • adaption, variation and transfer of game concepts

  • Awareness of different cultural perspectives
  • Transforming abstract concepts into vivid and interactive communication tools
  • Use of game mechanisms as a communication format
